Green Tips

Recycle: The most basic of all steps to starting you on a greener path is to recycle all bottles, jars, lids, tubes and packaging. Consumer product packaging accounts for about one third of all landfill waste so think before you toss your empty products. Check your local municipal recycling programs for details. Some municipalities accept all types of plastic for recycling, while others only accept jugs, containers and bottles with certain numbers stamped on the bottom.

If your area does not accept these materials, reuse them – each of our jars and bottles can be used in a number of clever ways, from travel or kitchen containers to crafting…Use your imagination!

Conserve Water: Fresh water is a scarce resource: only 1% of the water on this planet is usable so do your part to protect it by monitoring water use in your home:

  • Take shorter showers and replace your showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version. Turn off the water when you’re shaving – don’t worry, the residual steam will keep you warm. By shortening your shower by a minute or two you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month!
  • Use the minimum amount of water needed for a bath by closing the drain first and filling the tub only 1/3 full then adjusting the temperature as the tub fills up.
  • Don’t let the water run while washing your face. A good tip is to brush your teeth first while waiting for the water to get hot, then washing after filling the basin.
  • If you need to adjust the water temperature, turn the hot or cold tap down rather than increasing the water flow to balance the temperatures.

Less Waste: According to the Environmental Protection Agency, we toss about 2 billion plastic razors each year alone! Invest in reusable items like razors and washcloths over throwaway wipes and buy concentrated skin care so a little goes a long way.
